Before you start your driving lessons

Before you can start your driving lessons you need to have a provisional driving licence. if you do not have one you can apply for one from the DVLA. or obtain the application form to apply for one from your local post office.

You can apply for your provisional car driving licence up to three months before your seventeenth birthday, however, it would not become valid until you were seventeen, allowing you to start your driving lessons or course on your seventeenth birthday if you wish (nice birthday present).

Your driving lessons or course can start as soon as your provisional driving licence becomes valid, but you can’t book the practical driving test until you have passed the theory test. The theory test is usually available through appointment within a week or two and can be planned to coincide with your seventeenth birthday.

The waiting time for a practical driving test is normally 6 -10 weeks.  earlier dates are occasionally available through test appointment cancellations.

As demonstrated above, Provided you have a valid provisional driving licence and with careful planning and choice of course it is possible to pass your driving test within a few months.
